The host family at our lunch in Nalaikh. Nalaikh is the sight of Mongolia's first coal mine. The mines were formally closed, but informal miners continue to mine for coal in very dangerouse circumstances. A fatal methane gas explosion in 1990 that killed 21 forced the government to shut down the mine.

One of several visits we made to nomadic families included this visit to a family that kept cows.
A mound of sacred stones called ovoos. They are found in Mongolian shamanic religious traditions, usually made from rocks with wood or from wood. Ovoos are often found at the top of mountains and in high places, like mountain passes.

One of the travelers brought some plastic bats and balls as a gift to the family. This led to an impromptu game for all.

We were fortunate to find a reindeer herding family on the lake. They had come down from the north for summer grazing and to get some income from tourists.
