Melka Kunture is a Palaeolithic site south of Addis. The archaeological record of Melka Kunture spans over 1.7 million years, up to historic times. It is under consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The current church at the site of the original of the 13th century monastery founded by Saint Teklehaimanot. The church sits on a terrace between a cliff and a gorge formed by one of the tributaries of the Blue Nile.
